How Long Does PDLC Smart Glass Last? Durability Tests, Warranties, and Care
Smart Glass Revealed
How long does smart glass last? The PDLC smart glass film STARTEK uses was tested by the Research Center for Energy Technology and Strategy at National Cheng Kung University: after 80,000 on/off cycles, light transmittance dropped by just 0.29%, well within the 3% the standard allows. In everyday use, that corresponds to more than 10 years of typical use. Warranties depend on the product: laminated switchable glass comes with a 5-year standard warranty, extendable to 10 years for a fee; retrofit PDLC film has 3 years, extendable to 5 for a fee; and Startek R has 1 year. All warranties start on the date the installation is formally accepted.
"How many years will it last?" is one of the first questions designers and owners ask about switchable glass. This guide pulls together everything that answers it: what the durability tests show, whether the film discolors, how long each product's warranty runs, and how to operate and clean it day to day.
Specifications and warranty information: STARTEK product specifications and product-specific warranty terms (2026). Third-party report numbers are listed in the article.
PDLC smart glass turns clear when powered, because the liquid crystals line up, and frosted when the power is off. Switching cycles are a finite resource, so the first thing to look at is a switching test.
For everyday use, 80,000 cycles corresponds to more than 10 years of typical use. Keep in mind that this describes usage intensity. Actual service life also depends on how often the glass switches, where it's installed, and how it's used, and it isn't the same as the warranty term. See the warranty breakdown below.
Another common concern is whether the film discolors after years of light exposure. Two weathering reports are available, both on a heat-control PDLC 97-Ex(GR) sample submitted by BenQ Materials:
Both reports cover a heat-control sample and rely on visual inspection and transmittance. Neither measured a yellowness index, and the results can't be converted into years of outdoor use. If you're specifying a different model, ask us for the data on that model.
PDLC film itself blocks more than 99% of UV. That's a UV-blocking rate, not evidence that the film resists aging or yellowing.
Warranty terms vary by product, and all of them start on the acceptance date:
Standard warranty: 5 years, included
Extension: up to 10 years for a fee (StarCare)
Best for: new construction or renovation, wet areas, residential developments
Standard warranty: 3 years
Extension: up to 5 years for a fee (StarCare)
Best for: upgrading existing glass; not for wet areas
Standard warranty: 1 year
Extension: none
Best for: locations that must stay clear during a power outage
Transformer: 2 years, excluding human-caused damage
BenQ AWS100 power supply and remote: 1 year
Extension: none
A common misunderstanding is that smart glass "comes with a 10-year warranty." The accurate version: laminated switchable glass includes a 5-year standard warranty, and 10 years is the total after a paid extension. For the differences between retrofit film and laminated glass, see Retrofit PDLC Film or Laminated Switchable Glass?
Because switching cycles are finite, day-to-day care comes down to avoiding unnecessary switching and letting the glass rest unpowered when the space is empty.
Standard PDLC is clear when powered and frosted when off, so frosted is its resting state. If it's connected to a smart home or building control system, add a schedule for unoccupied hours. Here's an example:
Startek R works the other way around: clear when the power is off, frosted when it's on. Its resting state is off and clear, so reverse the schedule. Don't keep it powered all night just to keep it frosted.

The PDLC film STARTEK uses lost 0.29% of its light transmittance after 80,000 on/off cycles in third-party testing, within the 3% the standard allows. That corresponds to more than 10 years of typical use. Actual service life depends on switching frequency, environment, and use; warranty terms are listed by product.
The available weathering data covers a heat-control PDLC 97-Ex(GR) sample submitted by BenQ Materials: after 1,500 hours of xenon-arc accelerated weathering it showed no cracking, peeling, blistering, or discoloration on visual inspection, and visible light transmittance went from 66.15% to 65.62%. Neither report measured a yellowness index, and the results can't be converted into years of use.
Laminated switchable glass: 5-year standard warranty, extendable to 10 years for a fee. Retrofit PDLC film: 3 years, extendable to 5 for a fee. Startek R: 1 year, no extension. Transformers: 2 years, excluding human-caused damage. BenQ AWS100 power supply and remote: 1 year.
On the acceptance date. The StarCare extended warranty must be purchased with the original quote or within 30 days after acceptance.
Laminated switchable glass has a 5-year standard warranty, extendable to 10 years for a fee; retrofit PDLC film has 3 years, extendable to 5 for a fee. For wet areas, choose laminated glass rather than retrofit film.
STARTEK provides a warranty card listing the product, warranty period, and support contact. You can reach STARTEK customer service directly on LINE at @startek.
Tell STARTEK where you plan to install the glass, the dimensions of each pane, whether it should normally be clear or frosted, and whether it's new construction or existing glass. We'll recommend a product, installation method, and warranty option for your site.
